…Do the things
That you always wanted to
Without me there to hold you back
Don’t think, just do

More than anything
I want to see you girl
Take a glorious bite
Out of the whole world

You Could Be Happy-

"Yes, good. Justice is important but life is more important. You shouldn’t feel better about that kind of loss. It shows you’re human.”
Barbara gets all the awards! Yay!
Again, this connection between Cass and Babs is the core of the entire series. Bruce receives emphasis and revising again and again, because it’s the more dynamic of the two. He and Cass must grow together as a result of their relationship. But Babs is by far more important because she is stable and self-sufficient. Her bond with Cass is immediate and nurturing. She is the grounding force for Cass.
After 17 issues, this is when Cass begins to put the pieces together and realize that no matter how much she loves Bruce, she has Barbara to go to, to steer her straight. And that’s a powerful sentiment.
Not to jump too far ahead, but the biggest misstep of future creative teams is to remove this element from the series. It removes the heart and soul of what made the book so unique and refreshing.

The woman took a step backward. “You must leave this city soon, Daenerys Targaryen, or you will never be permitted to leave it at all.”
Dany’s wrist still tingled where Quaithe had touched her. “Where would you have me go?” she asked.
“To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow.

Busting out of the cocoon

I am standing at a cross roads
Or in my cave where I have been crouched for what feels like ages and I am staring to claw my way out
It never dawned on me how scary it is for the butterfly to destroy house and home to be able to fly out…
Can’t get out of the cocoon and preserve the shell for posterity or in order not to rock the boat
I am at the verge of premeditated destruction.

"I’ve put my life as Batgirl behind me… as much as possible. It helps that I’ve passed the name on to Cassandra. It gives me some… distance. As if watching it all on a monitor… But that doesn’t mean I don’t want her stopped. And believe me, I’d do anything — anything! — to be the one to bring her in! So let’s get to work. Any ideas where her hideout might be?”
Off subject slightly, I adore the framing of that first panel.
Moving on to relevant matters, this is what was so amazing about Barbara’s time as Oracle. Honest to god character growth, and so much of it was influenced directly by her relationship with Cassandra.
And it’s not like that’s an aspect of her growth that only happened in Cass’ Batgirl series. It carried over as a subplot in this book. That’s huge. Cass’ impact on Barbara is huge and I can’t get over it. Ever.
I’ve said it once before, I’ll say it again: like Dick evolved Bruce’s character into someone I’m interested in reading about, Cassandra evolved Barbara to depths and heights she had never been before. I’m just not interested in a Barbara Gordon who doesn’t have Cassandra in her life, who doesn’t have this huge growth of character to be enjoyed.
